Zehbour Panossian, Bachelor in Physics from the University of São Paulo (1975 ) and a Doctorate in Physical Chemistry from the University of São Paulo (1981). She is currently a researcher at the Laboratory for Corrosion and Protection (since 1976) and President (since 2018) of the Institute for Technological Research of São Paulo State - IPT, Director of the Brazilian Corrosion Association - ABRACO and visiting professor at the University of São Paulo (since 1985). She is vice chairman of the NACE - STG 35 Committee, Brazil's representant at the International Corrosion Council and a member of the Board of the Brazilian Standardization Association - ABNT. She has experience in chemistry, with emphasis on electrochemistry, acting on the following topics: corrosion and corrosion protection, electroplating and surface treatment. She coordinates research and technological development projects, advises on corrosion and protection, especially in optimizing production processes in the field of surface treatment and provides technological services to the productive sector. This presentation has the objective to show the beginning of Corrosion Science in Brazil which was driven at that time by oil and gas industry, when Petrobras assumed the responsibility for the exploitation, production, transportation and refining of Brazilian petroleum. Due to the lack of knowledge in corrosion, Brazilian technicians were trained abroad and after some time the courses started in Brazil. Due to this growing scenery, the specialists pointed out the necessity of a corrosion association in Brazil, like NACE; so ABRACO was founded and plays an important role in research centers and universities. Besides the beginning of Corrosion Science in Brazil and ABRACO, this presentation highlights the role of the University of São Paulo and the Laboratory of Corrosion and Protection at the Institute of Technological Research of São Paulo State - IPT, and collaborations in corrosion R&D. Finally, some failure analyses and corrosion protection techniques will be shown.
